Salicylic Acid (BHA) Skincare Products, Singapore

Searching for the best salicylic acid skincare in Singapore? This collection has you covered. Salicylic acid, also called BHA (beta hydroxy acid), is a chemical exfoliant that clears clogged pores and persistent blackheads. Every Paula's Choice BHA formula is fragrance-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free, and backed by peer-reviewed research.

Why Salicylic Acid Works So Well in Singapore

Singapore’s heat, humidity, sunscreen use, and daily pollution can trap oil and debris inside pores. That often leads to congestion, rough texture, and breakouts.

Salicylic acid, also called BHA (beta-hydroxy acid), is oil-soluble. That is the key difference from AHA. Because it dissolves in oil, it can travel through the sebum sitting inside your pore and not just skim the surface. It works at a pH of 3.2 to 4, which is the level needed for it to exfoliate effectively. Once inside the pore, it breaks down the dead skin buildup that causes blackheads, whiteheads, and congestion.

Benefits of BHA for Skin

  • Unclogs blocked pores

  • Reduces blackheads and whiteheads

  • Helps calm acne-prone skin

  • Smooths rough or bumpy texture

  • Makes pores look smaller over time

  • Brightens dull skin tone

  • Supports clearer skin in humid climates

Best BHA Salicylic Acid Products Singapore: Shop by Skin Concern

Not sure which BHA exfoliant in Singapore is right for you? Here is what works for the most common skin concerns.

Skin Concern

Best Pick

Why It Works

Best for acne and oily skin

2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

Fastest-absorbing formula. Works on active breakouts and prevents new ones from forming.

Best for sensitive or reactive skin

1% BHA Sensitive Skin Exfoliant

Lowest concentration. Still clears pores without triggering irritation.

Best for body (arms, back, chest)

Weightless Body Lotion with 2% BHA

Larger coverage. Clears keratosis pilaris and body breakouts.

Best for anti-aging and pore refinement

Advanced Pore-Refining Treatment 4% BHA

Higher concentration for those already comfortable with BHA.

Best for deep resurfacing (experienced users)

25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel

Multi-acid rinse-off peel for advanced texture and tone concerns.

BHA Concentration Guide: 1%, 2%, 4% and 25% Which Is Right for You?

We offer four BHA concentrations. The right one depends on how your skin currently responds to exfoliation and not on how many problems you are trying to solve.

1% BHA for Sensitive Skin

The lowest concentration available. Ideal for first-time BHA users and those with sensitive, dry, or reactive skin. Provides gentle exfoliation inside the pore without pushing the skin into purging. A good entry point if you have never used a leave-on exfoliant in Singapore before.

2% BHA: The Most-Used Concentration

This is what most people in Singapore use daily. Strong enough to clear blackheads, acne, and clogged pores and gentle enough for regular use. Available in liquid, lotion, and gel formats. The 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is the most popular format. It is fast-absorbing and effective for oily skin and combination skin

4% BHA for Stubborn Clogged Pores

If you have been using 2% BHA for months with results plateauing, 4% is the next step. Best for stubborn clogged pores and persistent blackheads in skin that tolerates exfoliation well. Not recommended as a starting point.

25% AHA + 2% BHA Peel for Advanced Resurfacing

This is a rinse-off peel and not a leave-on exfoliant. The 25% AHA blend targets fine lines, uneven skin tone, and advanced signs of anti-aging at the surface. The 2% BHA component goes deeper into the pore simultaneously. Use once a week at most. For experienced exfoliant users only.

How to Use Salicylic Acid (BHA) in Your Skincare Routine

Step-by-Step Application Order

  1. Cleanse with a gentle, water-soluble cleanser.

  2. Apply any water-based toner if you use one.

  3. Apply your BHA leave-on liquid exfoliant using a cotton pad or fingertips, pressing gently onto skin. Do not rinse off.

  4. Wait 1 to 2 minutes.

  5. Apply serum and moisturizer. For daytime, follow with a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater.

How Often to Use BHA

  • Week 1 to 2: Use 2 to 3 times per week, in the evening.

  • Week 3 onward: Increase to daily use if your skin is tolerating it well.

  • Morning use: Fine if your skin is not reactive, but always follow with a broad-spectrum SPF.

  • Evening use: Preferred for most skin types as skin repairs itself overnight.

What NOT to Mix with BHA to Minimize Irritation

  • Retinol: Do not apply retinol in the same step. Use BHA one night and retinol the next. Over time, many people layer these successfully, but start separately.

  • Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid): Best used in the morning. BHA works better in the evening. No need to alternate. Just keep them in separate routines.

  • Other exfoliants: Do not use AHA and BHA in the same step. The 25% peel already combines both, and that is the only exception.

What Works Well with BHA

  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): A very effective combination for oily skin and pore reduction. BHA clears the pore, and niacinamide reduces sebum and minimises pore appearance. Apply BHA first, then niacinamide.

  • Hyaluronic acid: Keeps skin hydrated while BHA exfoliates. Good for dry or combination skin types.

  • Sunscreen: Non-negotiable after any exfoliant use. BHA increases sun sensitivity. In Singapore's climate, use SPF 30 minimum every morning.

Salicylic Acid vs Glycolic Acid: BHA vs AHA

Both are chemical exfoliants. Both remove dead skin cells. The difference is where they work.

BHA vs Retinol: What Is the Difference?

Salicylic acid (BHA) and retinol are two of the most effective ingredients in skincare. They work on different mechanisms and are not direct alternatives.

Will Salicylic Acid Cause Skin Purging?

Sometimes, yes. Purging happens when clogged material under the skin comes up faster.

Normal Purging

  • Happens where you usually break out

  • Starts early

  • Improves within 2 to 6 weeks

Not Normal

  • Breakouts in new areas

  • Burning or itching

  • Persistent redness

  • Gets worse every week

If purging happens, continue at a reduced frequency and give it 4 to 6 weeks. Most users see pore improvement within that window. If reacting, stop and try the 1% BHA instead.

BHA for Acne Treatment in Singapore: Hormonal, Cystic, and Adult Acne

Salicylic acid for oily skin is well established. But BHA also works on hormonal acne and cystic acne, which are the types that sit deeper and do not respond to surface-only treatments.

  • Hormonal acne: Usually appears on the chin and jawline. BHA gets into the follicle where hormonal sebum buildup starts. It does not replace hormonal treatment but reduces the visible result of it.

  • Cystic acne: Deeper lesions benefit from BHA's anti-inflammatory properties. Use daily at 2% to keep pores clear and reduce the frequency of cystic flares.

  • Adult acne: Increasingly common in Singapore due to heat, humidity, sunscreen use, and stress. BHA addresses the congestion component while being gentle enough for daily use.

Paula’s Choice BHA Range: Products That Deliver Proven Results

Paula’s Choice uses salicylic acid across a focused BHA range designed to clear pores, reduce blackheads, control excess oil, and improve skin texture.

  • BHA Pore Purifiers

Lightweight daily formulas that remove oil, debris, and pollution while keeping pores clear between exfoliation treatments. Suitable for use twice daily after cleansing.

  • BHA Leave-On Exfoliants

The core of the range. Available in liquid, lotion, and gel textures, these formulas stay on the skin and work throughout the day or night. The 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, while lotion textures suit drier or sensitive skin.

  • BHA Facial Peels

Intensive weekly rinse-off treatments. The 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel improves dullness, uneven tone, fine lines, and clogged pores in one step. Best suited for experienced exfoliant users.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paula’s Choice’s BHA Skincare Products

Are BHA products suitable for all skin types?

Yes, with the right concentration.

  • Sensitive skin: start with 1% BHA.
  • Oily or acne-prone skin: the 2% BHA Liquid or Lotion.
  • Resistant or congested skin: 4% BHA.
  • Dry skin types can use BHA. It does not strip moisture. Layer a moisturizer after applying.

Can I use BHA on sensitive skin?

Yes. The 1% BHA Sensitive Skin Exfoliant is specifically formulated for reactive and sensitive skin types. Start 2 to 3 times per week and assess after 4 weeks before increasing frequency.

What is the difference between AHA and BHA?

AHA (glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic) is water-soluble and works on the skin's surface. It is best for dullness, dry skin, and sun damage. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble and penetrates into the pore. It is best for acne, blackheads, and oily skin.

How long does it take to see results from BHA?

Most people notice pore improvement within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use. Blackhead reduction shows earlier, around the 2 to 3 week mark, with daily use. Skin texture smooths within the first month. For anti-aging concerns, allow 3 months of consistent use.

Can I use BHA every day?

Yes, for most skin types at 1% or 2%. Start at 2 to 3 times per week. Build to daily use if your skin shows no irritation, no persistent redness, no tightness, and no peeling. 4% BHA is better used every other day or 3 to 4 times per week.

Can I mix BHA with niacinamide or vitamin C?

With niacinamide: Yes. Apply BHA first, then follow with niacinamide. A very effective combination for oily skin and pore reduction.

With vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid): Keep them in separate routines to minimize irritation. Use vitamin C in the morning and BHA in the evening. They do not cancel each other out. They are just more effective when not competing for the same application slot.

Will BHA cause skin purging?

It can, especially in the first 2 to 4 weeks. Purging means skin that was already congested clears faster than usual. It happens in your usual breakout zones and resolves on its own. If breakouts appear in new areas or skin becomes persistently irritated, that is a reaction. Reduce frequency or switch to the 1% concentration.

What concentration of BHA should I start with?

If you have never used BHA before: start with 1% for sensitive skin and 2% for all other skin types. The 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is the most widely used starting point in Singapore. If you have used chemical exfoliants before and your skin handles them well, 2% is fine from day one.

Is BHA safe during pregnancy?

Small amounts of salicylic acid are usually safe, but stronger forms like those in certain peels or acne treatments should be avoided during pregnancy. This is because your skin can absorb higher amounts, which might pose a risk to the baby’s development. Browse the pregnancy-safe skincare collection for alternatives that are safe throughout pregnancy.
