Skin Perfecting: BHA & AHA Exfoliants
Blackheads that return weeks after extraction. Skin that feels rough or looks congested no matter how carefully you cleanse. Pores that appear larger than they should, or a complexion that looks dull without obvious breakouts.
These are common experiences — and often a sign that dead skin cells accumulating on the surface and inside the pore lining need more than cleansing to address.
Exfoliation removes those cells.
BHA (beta-hydroxy acid, specifically salicylic acid) is oil-soluble — it penetrates inside the pore lining to dissolve the debris that causes blackheads and congestion.
AHA (alpha hydroxy acid: glycolic, lactic, mandelic acid) works at the skin surface to smooth rough texture, improve brightness, and accelerate cell turnover.
Used as leave-on formulas, both maintain consistent contact with the skin — which is what produces results that rinse-off scrubs cannot match.
Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting exfoliants are fragrance-free, clinically tested to be non-irritating, and formulated around concentrations shown in peer-reviewed research to produce visible results.
There is a formula for every skin type — from first-time users to those who need a stronger approach for persistent congestion.

What Leave-On Exfoliants Actually Do
All Skin Perfecting products are leave-on formulas — applied after cleansing, then left on the skin.
Leave-on contact time is what produces consistent, visible results.
Inside the pore (BHA): Salicylic acid works at a low pH (3.0 to 4.0). It dissolves the keratin plug and sebum debris inside the pore lining — the material that builds into blackheads and makes pores appear larger.
It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for skin prone to both congestion and breakouts.
On the surface (AHA): Glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids break the bonds between dead skin cells at the surface — speeding cell turnover from approximately 28 days to closer to 7 to 14 days.
The result is a smoother texture, improved brightness, and a more even-looking complexion. Because cell turnover slows with age, regular AHA use becomes more impactful over time.
What they cannot do: Exfoliants address the dead-cell build-up that contributes to congestion, roughness, and dullness — but pore size is primarily genetic. You can make pores look smaller by keeping them clear and controlling sebum, but you cannot permanently change their physical dimensions.
For persistent acne, combining BHA with a targeted anti-acne treatment produces better results than exfoliation alone.

Key Ingredients
|
Ingredient |
What It Does |
|
Salicylic Acid (BHA, 1–9%) |
Oil-soluble exfoliant that penetrates the pore lining and dissolves sebum-based congestion. Works at a low pH (3.0 to 4.0). Has mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The most research-backed ingredient for blackheads and oily-skin congestion. |
|
Glycolic Acid (AHA, 5–25%) |
Water-soluble exfoliant that breaks the bonds between dead surface cells, accelerating cell turnover. The smallest AHA molecule — fast-acting and effective, with some independent tyrosinase-inhibiting activity at higher concentrations. Best for texture and dullness. |
|
Lactic Acid (AHA) |
Larger-molecule AHA — gentler than glycolic acid. Provides surface exfoliation alongside mild hydrating properties. Well suited to normal-to-dry and moderately sensitive skin. |
|
Mandelic Acid (AHA) |
Largest commonly used AHA molecule — slowest absorption, most tolerable for sensitive skin and darker Fitzpatrick skin tones. Effective for surface exfoliation and uneven tone. Available in the 6% Mandelic Acid + 2% Lactic Acid formula. |
|
Green Tea Extract |
Included in Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, green tea extract helps calm the skin during exfoliation while providing antioxidant protection against environmental stressors. |
|
Niacinamide (in select formulas) |
Supports the skin barrier and reduces redness. Helps offset the temporary dryness that can occur when introducing exfoliants. Pairs well with BHA in pore-focused formulas. |
When Will You See Results?
|
Goal |
Typical Timeline |
|
Reduction in visible blackheads and pore congestion |
4 to 8 weeks of consistent use — daily or every other day depending on skin tolerance |
|
Improvement in rough skin texture and dullness |
4 to 6 weeks — AHA texture results are often noticeable from week 3 to 4 |
|
Overall skin clarity and brightness |
6 to 8 weeks — full surface renewal cycle with regular exfoliation |
|
Smoother, brighter-looking skin after an intensive exfoliation treatment |
Results may be noticeable within 24 to 48 hours after using the 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel. Longer-term improvements in texture, tone, and pore appearance typically develop over 4 to 8 weeks of weekly use. |
Exfoliation in Singapore's Climate
-
Heat, Humidity, and Faster Pore Clogging
Singapore's year-round heat, outdoor humidity above 80%, and daily sunscreen use create conditions where pores clog faster than in temperate climates. Sweat, excess sebum, and residue from SPF products accumulate in the pore lining throughout the day. A leave-on BHA exfoliant applied in the evening dissolves this build-up consistently — making it especially effective in Singapore's conditions compared to spot-treatment approaches.
-
Air Conditioning and Skin Texture
Spending extended time in air-conditioned environments accelerates skin dehydration — indoor humidity in Singapore can drop below 40%, roughly half of outdoor levels. Dehydrated skin cells turn over more slowly and can contribute to a dull, uneven surface. A regular AHA routine helps compensate by clearing the surface layer and maintaining brightness even when hydration fluctuates.
-
Lightweight Formulas for Humid Days
Heavy or occlusive exfoliant textures can feel uncomfortable in Singapore's heat and contribute to congestion. The 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant and 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant are lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas suited to humid conditions. For those who reapply SPF throughout the day, an evening exfoliant helps clear the day's product build-up consistently.
How to Build a Skin-Perfecting Routine
Leave-on exfoliants are applied after cleansing and toning — before serums and moisturizers. Evening use is practical for most people and allows the exfoliant to work overnight.
Step 1 — Cleanse: Remove sunscreen, sweat, and surface impurities with your regular cleanser.
Step 2 — Tone: Apply a toner if using one. The Pore-Reducing Toner contains niacinamide and pairs well before exfoliation.
Step 3 — Exfoliant: Apply to dry skin using fingertips or a cotton pad. Do not rinse off. If using BHA and AHA, alternate evenings rather than applying simultaneously. Allow a few minutes to absorb before the next step.
Step 4 — Serums and treatments: Exfoliated skin absorbs actives more efficiently. Apply serums and targeted treatments after the exfoliant has been absorbed.
Step 5 — Moisturizer: Seal with a moisturizer suited to your skin type. Lightweight gel for oily skin; richer moisturizer for dry skin.
Step 6 — SPF (morning only): Always apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above in the morning. Freshly exfoliated skin is more photosensitive — especially in Singapore's high-UV environment.
Frequency: Start 2 to 3 times per week. Build to daily use if your skin tolerates it. If redness or unusual dryness appears, reduce frequency and allow your skin to adapt.
Daily SPF reminder: Exfoliants remove the outermost layer of skin cells, which increases UV sensitivity. In Singapore's high-UV environment — UV Index 6 to 9 daily, reaching 11 and above — always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or greater every morning.
